Leket Mobilizes in Time of War
The ongoing war in Gaza and Lebanon has caused Leket Israel to adapt and greatly increase its efforts to match the need.
The war has dramatically decreased the availability of surplus food for rescue (both fresh produce and surplus meals). At the same time, the conflict has deepened the struggle of many already living in poverty while pushing others into financial hardship. This has resulted in a significant increase in demand for Leket’s services from all sectors of society, with the number of recipients served per week increasing by 41% from 2022 to 2023. For this reason, Leket now purchases food to supplement that which cannot be rescued and continues to operate several ongoing relief projects to support farmers and evacuees that extend far beyond the organization’s usual activities.
Thankfully our donors in Israel and around the world have responded with unprecedented donations. With the cost to purchase food being 4-5 times more than the cost to rescue, coupled with the rise in demand for Leket’s services, every donation is needed and put to use.
